You are tired of turning up the volume on voices that are not yours—the expectations that arrived before you did, the frequency everyone around you is tuned to, the broadcast that says you should be louder, brighter, more available, more aligned with what they have already decided matters. You keep reaching for the dial and adjusting it upward, trying to match a signal you were never meant to carry, and the static is so loud now that you cannot hear what you actually know to be true.

The 2112 is not asking you to turn up anything. It is asking you to find your station—the one that was always broadcasting underneath all that noise—and to have the courage to turn down everything else.

The Radio Dial

Picture a hand moving across the face of an old radio, the kind with a silver dial and stations marked in thin black lines—AM bleeding into FM, numbers running from left to right. The hand is searching, turning the knob slowly, and as it moves, static fills the room, that white noise that sounds like the world itself before any voice arrives to claim it. The hand passes through fragments of other people’s broadcasts: a voice selling something, a song from a decade you do not live in, a preacher calling out to a god you do not recognize, the traffic report for a city you have never been to. All of it loud. All of it insistent. All of it saying this is the station, this is the one you need to hear.

Then the hand stops. Not because someone told it to. Because underneath all that noise, it found a frequency where something inside your chest recognized itself. Where the voice broadcasting—if there even is a voice—is so aligned with what you already know that the static falls away. Your whole body settles. You did not create that station. You did not invent the signal it carries. But you did recognize it. You found it by moving your hand through all the noise until you located the one frequency that made you feel less alone in your own skin.

This is what 2112 is asking you to do. Not to turn up the volume on the world’s broadcast. To find the station that matches what it already knows to be true, and then—the hard part—to turn down all the others.

Why the world trains you to amplify the wrong frequency

You have been trained since childhood to turn up certain frequencies and turn down your own. The voices that arrived first—your parents, your teachers, your religion, the culture you were born into—they came through loud and clear, and you learned that tuning in to them meant safety, love, belonging. So when you did discover your own station—the one that broadcasts what is true for you specifically, not for everyone—it sounded small by comparison. Quiet. Uncertain. Not loud enough to be real.

And so you kept reaching for the dial, turning up the volume on everyone else’s broadcast. Your boss’s frequency. Your partner’s. The algorithm’s. The voice of the version of you that you thought you should become. You turned them all up so high that you could barely hear yourself think, and when you did hear yourself—that small, quiet station broadcasting I want something different, I believe something else, I need to live in a way that makes sense to me—you turned that down instead. You do not do this because you are weak. You do this because the hand has been training since you were small, and old habits run deep. The dial responds to the pressure of decades. You have spent a long time learning that other people’s frequencies matter more than your own.

How to find the station that is yours

The first thing is to stop turning up. Not to turn down everything at once—that will terrify you—but to stop adding volume to the broadcasts that are not yours. Stop saying yes to the invitation that comes from someone else’s station. Stop explaining yourself to people who are not tuned to your frequency. Stop reaching for the dial with the assumption that if you just turn it up loud enough, you will finally match what everyone else is hearing. You will not. That is not how radios work, and it is not how you work either.

Start small. In the next few days, notice which broadcasts you are turning up out of habit versus which ones make your whole body settle when you listen to them. Notice which voices make you feel more yourself, and which ones make you feel like you are performing a version of yourself that someone else wrote. If you are struggling to hear your own station underneath all the noise—and many people are, because the training runs deep—a good therapist or a trusted person who knows you at your core can help you tune back in. There is no weakness in reaching for help to find yourself again. The difficulty you are carrying is real, and the clarity you deserve is real, and sometimes you need another person’s ears to help you hear what you already know.

Then, when you have located it—that frequency that makes you feel less alone in your own knowing—turn it up. Not all the way, not so loud that it drowns out necessary information. Just enough that you can hear it over the noise. Enough that you can make decisions from that place instead of from the frequency that was never meant to be yours.

What runs through your mind What’s actually true
If I stop turning up their volume, they will leave me or be angry with me Some will. That is the cost of finding your own station. The ones who stay are the ones who are tuned to your frequency. They are the ones who matter.
My station is too quiet, too small, too strange to be the right one The rightness of a frequency is not measured in decibels. It is measured in whether it makes you feel more real, not less.
I have been turning up the wrong volume for so long that I do not know what mine sounds like anymore You will recognize it the moment you hear it. It is the one that makes your nervous system settle. Your body knows. Trust that.
Turning down other people’s frequencies means I am selfish or rejecting them No. It means you are finally willing to let yourself matter. That is not rejection. That is self-respect.

A little help, while you’re here

  • The next time someone makes a request or an assumption about what you should do, notice your gut reaction before you answer. That quick, quiet response is your station. Write it down. You do not have to act on it yet. Just listen to it.
  • Spend one hour this week doing something that only you want to do—not something that looks good, not something you should do, but something that makes you feel like yourself. The smaller and stranger, the better. This is you turning up your own dial.
  • Identify one voice you have been turning up out of habit, and reduce it by one notch. One notch. Not silence. Just quieter. Notice what happens in your chest when you do.

Your signal, steady and readable

There will come a time—not today, not maybe for months—when you stop searching for the dial at all. When the movement becomes so natural that you do not even think about it anymore. You will be living your life, and you will notice that you are no longer reaching to turn up everyone else’s volume. You are no longer performing someone else’s broadcast. You are simply steady on your own frequency, and something in you has gone quiet—not the quiet of suppression, but the quiet of arrival, of finally being where you belong.

And then something else happens. People who are tuned to your exact frequency will start to find you. Not everyone. Never everyone. But the ones who are broadcasting the same truth that you are, in their own voice, in their own style—they will recognize you. They will turn up your station. They will say, I thought I was the only one hearing this. And you will say, No. You were never alone. You just had to stop turning down the volume on your own knowing long enough to broadcast it.

The 2112 is not a cosmic permission slip. It is a recognition—that the station was always there, that your hand knows how to find it, that the signal you carry matters not because it is the loudest or the brightest or the most aligned with what everyone else decided was true, but because it is yours. Turn it up. Let it broadcast. The ones who need to hear it are already listening.
