You have been told to assess your spiritual health the way a person assesses anything measurable—step on the scale, read the number, know where you stand. And you have been stepping on that scale, day after day, in different light, at different hours, sometimes after you have eaten and sometimes before, sometimes carrying the weight of your clothes and sometimes not, and each time the number shifts. Each time it tells you something different. And you have started to believe that one of these readings is the truth, and the others are you failing, or the scale failing, or your understanding of spiritual health failing altogether.

There is no failure here. The scale is doing exactly what scales do. The terror you feel is not a spiritual crisis or a mental health crisis—it is the exhaustion of trying to hold your whole life in one moment’s measurement, and mistaking that single number for the full story of your health. I am going to take that fear off you now, and show you what the scale is actually for.

The Scale That Changes

Picture a doctor’s scale in a bright clinic, the old kind with the sliding weights and the mechanical needle. A woman steps on it at seven in the morning, fasting, in her underwear. The needle lands on one number. She writes it down. That evening, after a full day of work and water and a real meal, she steps on it again—same scale, same woman, same clinic. The needle has moved. The next morning, after she has slept poorly and the humidity is high and she has eaten dinner late, she steps on it once more. Different number again. By Friday, stepping on it at noon in her clothes after coffee, she has collected five different readings, and none of them match, and she has begun to believe that either the scale is broken or she is broken or the entire enterprise of measuring herself is a lie.

But none of those things is true. The scale is working perfectly. It is simply doing what it was built to do: measuring the variable reality of a living body in time. The needle moves because the body is not a fixed thing. It is a river. And a river measured at different points, in different seasons, at different times of day, will always yield different numbers. The scale is not lying. The woman is not failing. She is mistaking a single measurement for a diagnosis.

What You’re Actually Chasing

You have been taught to believe that a thing either is or is not—that you are either spiritually healthy or spiritually sick, that your purpose is either clear or obscured, that you are either aligned or lost. And so when you step on the scale of your own life and find yourself in a state that does not match the image of health you have been holding, you conclude that you are failing. What you are actually measuring is the effect of context on a living, moving thing.

Your spiritual health reads differently depending on whether you have rested, whether you are in the season of building or the season of rest, whether you are carrying new grief or old grief, whether you have eaten enough, whether the people around you are well or struggling. It reads differently before you have had clarity and after. It reads differently when you are alone and when you are in community. When you step on the scale at the moment of lowest clarity—perhaps in the early morning, or in the middle of loss—you are not measuring your health. You are measuring the weight of your clothes that day. You are measuring whether you skipped breakfast. You are measuring time of day. And then you spend the rest of the week trying to fix a phantom number, trying to change something that was never the true measurement to begin with.

What a Healthy Assessment Actually Asks

A father does not stand over his child with a scale and demand that the needle stay in one place forever. He knows that a child grows, that the body changes, that sometimes there is sickness and sometimes there is health, and the only way to know which is to watch across time. The same is true of you. Stop asking: ‘What does the scale say today?’ That question will undo you because the scale changes every day, and you will chase a number that was never meant to be fixed. Instead, ask: ‘What pattern emerges across many days? What shows up again and again, regardless of the time of day or what I have eaten or what I am carrying?’

Keep a record—not obsessively, but genuinely—of how you feel, what feels true, what calls to you, what drains you. Not once. Many times. Across weeks. Across seasons. Let the pattern emerge. A real therapist or trusted spiritual guide can help you read that pattern with clarity, and if you find yourself in genuine crisis—if the confusion or the darkness does not lift, if you cannot find your footing—reach for that help without hesitation. There is no weakness in asking someone trained in the mind or the soul to help you sort the signal from the noise. What you are learning to do is distinguish between the variables that change hour to hour (the clothes, the breakfast, the time of checking) and the deeper rhythm that persists beneath them. That deeper rhythm is what your health actually is.

What runs through your mind What’s actually true
If my spiritual health was real, the clarity would be constant Clarity fluctuates like waking and sleeping. A pattern of clarity across many moments is what you are looking for, not an unbroken line.
I must be doing something wrong if I don’t feel aligned right now You may be tired. You may be in a necessary season of unknowing. You may be digesting something large. None of these are failures.
I should know my purpose by now and be able to prove it Purpose is revealed in how you spend your days across time, not in a single moment of certainty. The proof is in the pattern, not in the eureka.
Other people seem to have figured this out and stay figured out You are seeing their best moments. You are not living their hours. Everyone’s scale moves.
I’m too old/too young/too far gone to get this right Your spiritual health cannot be assessed in a single moment. It is already being revealed in the pattern of your life. Start noticing.

A little help, while you’re here

  • Write down, without judgment, what time of day you feel most clear about your purpose and what time you feel most lost. Do this for five days. Notice what variables shift with the clock, and which do not.
  • Identify one thing you can change about how you take the measurement—the time, whether you have rested, whether you have eaten. Change one variable deliberately and notice whether the clarity shifts. You are learning to read the scale, not to fix yourself.
  • Reach out to one person who knows you well—a therapist, a spiritual mentor, a friend who sees you—and ask them what pattern they notice in you across time. They may see the deeper number when you cannot.

The Scale Reads True

The scale in the bright clinic does not lie. It measures what is there. And what is there changes, every day, because you are alive and time moves and seasons turn. Your spiritual health is not a number. It is a pattern. It is a rhythm. It is the way you show up again and again, the way you reach for meaning, the way you tend what matters to you, the way you recover when you fall. These things do not show in a single reading. They show across many readings, across time, in the pattern that emerges beneath all the variables.

Stop stepping on the scale expecting the needle to stay still. The needle moves. That is what it is for. That is how you know it is working. What you are learning to do is read not the moment but the months. Not the morning but the arc. And when you do—when you begin to notice the pattern that persists beneath the daily shifts and the hourly changes—you will know something truer than any single reading could ever tell you. You will know that you are not broken. You are a living, moving, breathing thing, measured across time, and the scale is finally telling you the truth. The scale reads true.
