You are not falling apart. What you are experiencing is that the old wiring of your nervous system — the one that kept you functional, predictable, safe in the ordinary world — has been switched off. The lights cut out mid-renovation, and now everything that used to work the way it worked does not work anymore. You lie awake at 3 a.m. wondering if you are losing your mind because the circuitry you have always relied on has simply stopped firing the way it used to, and nothing you do restores it.

The terror in this is real. But the breakdown you are reading as evidence of something wrong is actually evidence of something necessary — a complete rewiring that your old self was never built to carry. The darkness you are standing in is not punishment or failure. It is the condition under which transformation happens. And you will not see the new pathways being laid while you stand in the dark, but they are being laid.

The house mid-renovation

Picture a house, walls stripped open, the drywall cut away to expose the framing beneath. Electrical work is happening—old wiring being pulled from the walls, new conduit being threaded through, new circuits being run where the old ones cannot hold the load. And then, abruptly, the power cuts off entirely. The main breaker is thrown. The rooms go dark. Every switch you flip does nothing. Every light is gone. The refrigerator stops humming. The furnace cuts to silence. Nothing responds the way it always has.

A person standing in that house in the dark would panic. They would flip switches. They would go to the breaker box and find the switch pulled deliberately, locked in place. They would think the whole electrical system has failed—that the house is broken, that something catastrophic has happened. But what has actually happened is precise and necessary: the old system has been deliberately shut down because it was designed to carry 100 amps and what is being built now requires 200. The darkness is not a failure. It is the only safe way to do the work.

This is what is happening in you. The sudden loss of the architecture that held you upright—the sense of who you are, what you can do, which feelings belong to you and which do not—is not a sign that you are breaking. It is a sign that you are being rewired, and the old switches had to go dark so the new circuitry could be laid.

Why your ordinary self cannot hold this voltage

You have spent your whole life in a particular nervous system—one that was shaped by your family, your culture, your survival, and the ordinary voltage of ordinary life. That system kept you functional. It taught you how to read a room, how to manage doubt, how to stay small enough to be safe. And then something changed. Maybe it was a sudden event. Maybe it was a slow accumulation. Maybe it was a door opening in your consciousness that you did not know was there. What matters is this: you began to sense something—a dimension of reality, a capacity in yourself, a kind of awareness—that the old circuitry was never meant to carry. The wiring that held you upright in the ordinary world cannot conduct this voltage. So it has been shut down.

This is not pathology. This is physics. The walls of your inner house are opened because the contractor—your own soul, the deepest part of you—determined that the foundation was sound but the electrical system was obsolete. You are standing in the dark because you are being upgraded, not because you are being destroyed. The panic you feel, the disorientation, the sense that your mind is fragmenting—these are the correct response to a complete rewiring. They are not evidence that something is wrong. They are evidence that something enormous is being made right.

Meeting the dark and reaching for real support

Here is what I need you to know: you cannot think your way out of this darkness. Your mind is the instrument being rewired, so your mind cannot be the tool that fixes it. You have to reach for bodies, for voices, for people who are present with you in the room while the dark is happening. A good therapist—one who understands that spiritual emergence is real and not a synonym for delusion, one who can sit with both the psychological and the sacred dimensions of what you are living—is not a detour from your spiritual path. It is part of the path. It is the hands and eyes you need while your own circuitry is offline. Trusted people, a doctor if the symptoms are acute, a spiritual director if you have one—these are not signs of weakness or failure of faith. They are the scaffolding that holds you while the foundation is being redug.

And as you reach for that help, begin to practice moving in the dark without panic. Your hands can feel what your eyes cannot see. You can place one foot in front of the other without sight. You can learn the shape of this darkness—not by fighting it, but by letting your other senses wake up. The disorientation will ease. Not because the rewiring will reverse, but because you will learn to navigate by touch, by sound, by the ground beneath you. The old comfort will not return, and that is the point. A new comfort—a steadiness that does not depend on things staying the same—is what is being built.

What runs through your mind What’s actually true
If I were really spiritually mature, I would not be this confused or this scared. Confusion and fear are not signs of failed spirituality. They are the necessary disorientation that happens when you are being rewired beyond the scope of what you have ever been before.
This much fragmentation means I am psychotic or losing my mind. You are losing your ordinary mind. That is different, and it is intentional. A psychotic break and a spiritual emergency are not the same thing—and a real therapist who understands this distinction will help you sort which is which.
I am supposed to be able to handle this alone, spiritually, without doctors or drugs or talking to anyone. The new circuitry being laid in you requires embodied support—real people, real help, real care. Asking for it is not spiritually immature. It is what a wise person does when standing in the dark.
If I go back to normal, all of this will have been wasted. You are not going back to normal. You are going forward to something your old self could not have conceived. The dark is not a detour. It is the renovation itself.

A little help, while you’re here

  • Call a therapist or counselor today—specifically one who has worked with spiritual emergence and can distinguish it from mental illness. Ask this question directly in the first session. If they cannot answer clearly, find another one.
  • Write down three concrete things that have changed in your mind or body since this began—not interpretations, just observations. (“I cannot sleep for more than two hours.” “Colors seem too bright.” “I know things I was not told.”) Bring this list to your doctor or therapist.
  • Find one trusted person—not someone who will fix you, but someone who will sit with you—and tell them you are in a dark place and need presence, not advice. Ask them to check in with you twice a week.
  • Spend fifteen minutes tomorrow with your hands on the earth or a tree or cool water—not meditating, not seeking experience, just touching something real and solid that is not your own nervous system.

Power returns to a rewired house

What you need to know is this: the darkness will not last forever. Not because it will reverse—it will not—but because your nervous system is learning to carry what it is being asked to carry. The new pathways will be laid. The new circuitry will be run. And at some point—not suddenly, but by accumulation—you will realize that you have moved through the dark and the lights have come back on. But they will not be the same lights. They will illuminate a room you have never seen before. A room that is larger. A room that can hold more.

You will not be the same person who entered the dark. That person was not built for this voltage. But the person you are becoming—the one whose nervous system is being rewired to conduct what you are beginning to sense as possible—that person is being built with intention and care, even now, even in the blindness. The walls are opened. The old wiring is gone. The new pathways are being laid. And when power returns, you will move through this house as someone who has learned not just to survive in the dark, but to trust that it was leading somewhere. Not dims. Not fades. Returns. And what it returns to illuminate is a self you are only beginning to meet.
