You are being taken apart, and you cannot stop it — the life you built on certainty, on knowing how to hold people steady, on being the one who does not ask for help. You can feel it happening in real time: the identity that carried you here, that made you trustworthy and capable and whole, is being systematically removed, piece by piece, as if someone came in the night with a saw.

This is your Saturn return, and what it is doing is not punishment. It is clarification.

The Pruning

Imagine a tree that has grown for twenty-eight years without much direction — branches going in ten directions, side growth that looked like addition, years of climbing ivy and wild cuttings and the accumulated weight of what the wind and the weather kept throwing at it. The tree is strong. It has survived. And then someone brings a saw, and in a single afternoon, cuts away everything that is not essential structure — the decorative work, the excess growth, the proof of survival, all of it, falling in piles around the root.

The tree stands naked afterward. What remains is stark, smaller looking, exposed to the light in ways that feel dangerous. The branches that are left are the ones that can actually hold the tree’s weight, the ones that came from the true center. For days the tree looks like it has been destroyed. Nothing but raw wood, open to the air, stripped of what made it look substantial.

And then spring comes. The sap rises from roots that are older and deeper than anything that was cut away. New growth comes from the true structure now, not from the tangle. The tree that grows from here will be stronger. It will hold a different shape — not bigger, but real.

Why does Saturn return happen to the healer?

Saturn is the planet of structure and consequence and time. Every twenty-eight years it returns to the place it was when you were born, and when it does, it audits everything you built in between — not to praise it, but to test it, to see what is actually load-bearing and what you only thought was necessary. For a healer, a teacher, a woman who has learned to hold others, this is catastrophic, because so much of what you constructed was done in service of being helpful. You became the woman who does not break. You learned to read people’s needs before they asked. You built a version of yourself that was so steady, so capable, so endlessly available, that other people could rest against you.

Saturn does not care that you built this out of love. It only cares whether you built it on truth. And for most healers, the answer is no — you built it on an idea of what would make you safe, what would make you necessary, what would make people not leave you. The saw cuts that away first. It cuts away the roles you invented to feel secure. It cuts away the version of yourself that you thought was unshakeable. Watch the ground around it — that is what used to belong to you, and now it does not. The identity you lived in is on the ground in pieces.

How to meet it, and where to reach.

First, understand that you cannot stop this. Resistance prolongs it and deepens the pain. The saw is not a punishment — it is a correction. The tree does not argue with pruning. You do not need to either.

Second, and this is not separate from the spiritual work — reach for actual help. A good therapist is not a failure of faith. A trusted person who you can tell the truth to is not weakness. This is the time your nervous system is going to need real, present support, not because you are broken, but because your foundations are being rebuilt and that is destabilizing work. The fear you are feeling is real and it deserves care — the kind that another human being can offer. Find someone you can tell the actual truth to, someone who will not ask you to be steady right now, and talk to them. Regularly. This is as much a part of the return as the internal work. A spiritual reading of what is happening is never a reason to skip the care your body and mind deserve.

Third, stop trying to grow in the old directions. The new growth will not come from the severed branches, no matter how much light you offer them. It will come from the central structure — from what is actually you, not what you invented to survive. That is where your attention goes now. What is true about you underneath all of it? Not what you do. What you actually are.

What runs through your mind What’s actually true
I am losing everything that makes me valuable. You are losing what you added on top. What you actually are — your depth, your real capacity, your genuine strength — is not being taken. It is being revealed.
No one is going to need me if I am this raw and uncertain. People need the real you far more than they needed the steady version. The people worth keeping will stay.
This feels like I am going backwards, like I am smaller. You are the same height. You are just finally standing on your own ground instead of on the structure you built. That feels smaller because it is real.
I should be handling this better than this. Saturn return is the second hardest initiation in a human life. You are not supposed to handle it well. You are supposed to move through it.

A little help, while you’re here

  • Write down one belief about yourself that you have held since before age twenty-eight, something you built as a survival strategy, and sit with the fact that it is not actually you. Do not try to change it or fix it. Just name it. When the impulse rises to defend it or prove it is true, write that impulse down instead.
  • Call one person and tell them one true thing about how you are actually doing — not the curated version, the real state. One person. One truth. Let yourself be met there.
  • Find one small place in your actual life — your home, your body, the hours of a day — where you have been trying to hold something together or keep something small, and let it fall apart for one hour. Let the dishes sit. Let the inbox back up. Let yourself be less available. Notice what happens when you are not managing.

The Sap Returns

You will not feel ready when the new growth comes. You will not feel like the version of yourself you were before. That is the point. The sap rises from roots that go deeper than the identity you were protecting. The tree that grows from here will be different — not less valuable, but real. It will hold a shape that is actually yours, that grows from your true center, not from the stories you told yourself about what would make you safe.

You are being cut down to what you actually are. This is not the end of your usefulness. It is the beginning of it. In the spring of your life that comes after — and it will come, and faster than you think — the growth that emerges will be stronger because it grows from truth. Not dims. Not fades. Deepens. The healer who has been pruned to her actual structure is the one who can hold others now without breaking, because she knows what it costs. She has been there. She has felt the saw. And she stood.

You will stand. The tree always does.
