My words sound like nonsense—Mercury retrograde and your voice
You are speaking clearly, and it sounds like nonsense to everyone who is still moving forward. You know what you mean — you can feel the coherence of it, the rightness of it — and you watch people’s faces close down as you explain, watch them decide you are confused or lost or, worst of all, that you are trying to confuse them. Nothing you say arrives the way you intend it. The authority is there. The clarity is there. And it lands backward, which reads as backward.
The pencil moving backward
Imagine a pencil at work on a page, but it is moving in the wrong direction — drawing from right to left while the page itself moves forward in time, in the ordinary direction. The letters form as it goes, perfectly formed, each one accurate and intentional, but they appear in reverse order: the last thing you meant to say arrives first, the beginning arrives last, and the whole of it reads as gibberish unless you hold it to a mirror. A person watching would think the pencil is broken, or the hand guiding it is confused, or some fundamental law has been violated. But the pencil is not broken. The hand knows exactly what it is doing. The letters are formed correctly. What has reversed is only the direction of arrival, and that reversal makes everything that comes out of you sound like it is coming unraveled.
This is what is happening to you when you speak your truth in a time when the world is still moving in the old direction, still accepting information in the old order. You are not confused. Your authority is real. Your clarity is real. But you are writing backward across the page while everyone else is still reading forward, and until they learn to hold what you are saying up to a mirror — until they are willing to read it in reverse and see the sense in it — you will sound like you are speaking in code, or in riddles, or in a language that has no grammar.
Why does Mercury retrograde make you sound like you’re speaking in reverse?
Because Mercury is the planet of how you speak and how you think, how you move information from the inside of you into the world where other people can reach it. When Mercury is retrograde — when it appears to be moving backward through the zodiac — the mechanism of that transmission reverses. You are still thinking. You are still knowing. But the order in which your knowing arrives in the world has changed. Where you used to say A, then B, then C, and have people nod and follow, now you find yourself saying the thing that matters most first, the context last, the setup never — because by the time you get there, people have already decided they do not understand you.
The letters are still forming correctly. The pencil is still in your hand. But it is moving through the sky in a retrograde arc, and that means everything you transmit has to be read in reverse to make sense. Your subordinates hear your instruction as a question. Your students hear your authority as uncertainty. Your partner hears your love as a condition. Not because you are unclear. But because the direction of the message — the sequence in which it arrives — is the opposite of what they expect. You cannot move forward and backward at the same time, but you are doing exactly that: your mind is moving forward, your voice is delivering backward, and the gap between those two directions is where the confusion lives.
What to do when your words arrive in the wrong order
You are going to need to be twice as explicit as you ever had to be, and you are going to hate it. You will have to say the thing that you thought was obvious, state the intention before you state the impact, name the love before you name the boundary — because people are still reading from left to right, and you are writing backward, and there is no way to close that gap except to say it twice, in both directions, until the reversal resolves. This is not weakness. This is not a failure of your clarity. This is a season in which the direction of arrival and the direction of understanding are temporarily misaligned, and bridging that gap requires more specificity, not less.
If you are in a position of real authority — if you teach, or lead, or guide — you may need to ask for help in this season. Not because you have lost your way, but because you are temporarily operating in a direction that your people are not accustomed to reading. A good therapist, a trusted mentor, a person who knows you and believes you — they can hear what you mean even when the order is wrong, and they can help you translate your backward-moving clarity into a language that the still-forward-moving people around you can receive. This is not a spiritual failing. This is a practical matter of physics: when two things are moving in opposite directions, a third thing is sometimes needed to bridge the space between them. Asking for that help is not a sign that your authority is in question. It is a sign that you are wise enough to know when the medium of transmission needs adjusting.
The pencil will continue its backward arc across the page. But you do not have to leave people standing at the edge of the page, confused, waiting for a message that is arriving in a language they have not yet learned to read.
| What runs through your mind | What’s actually true |
|---|---|
| “I’m losing my ability to lead. People aren’t listening to me anymore.” | Your people are hearing you in a different sequence than they’re used to. The authority hasn’t changed — the direction of arrival has. |
| “Maybe I was never as clear as I thought I was.” | You are as clear as you have always been. The clarity is moving backward across the page, which is a different phenomenon entirely. |
| “I should just stop saying things the hard way until this passes.” | Silence is not the answer — translation is. Say the intention first. Say it plainly. Say it twice if you have to. |
| “Everyone else seems to be moving forward just fine. What’s wrong with me?” | Nothing is wrong with you. You are temporarily moving in a different direction than the people around you, which is not a defect — it’s a season. |
A little help, while you’re here
- Write down one thing you need to say to someone important — a boundary, an instruction, a declaration of love — and then rewrite it in the opposite order: start with what matters most, end with the context. Read both versions aloud before you speak it.
- Choose one person who hears you even when the order is wrong, and tell them explicitly what you are trying to say before you say it. Let them be the mirror.
- In your next meeting where you need to be heard, state your intention in the first sentence, before you state anything else. Not the context. Not the lead-up. The intention.
- Sit with the pencil moving backward across the page and accept that this is temporary. Set a calendar reminder for when Mercury stations direct, and write one thing you noticed about yourself during the retrograde.
The mirror held steady
The pencil will move forward again. It always does. But here is what you have not yet understood: during these seasons when you are writing backward, you are not broken, and you are not alone. The people who love you will hold a mirror to what you are saying and read it in reverse if they have to — not because your words deserve that much labor, but because they know you, and they trust the clarity underneath the sequence. That trust is the real thing. That is what lasts. The retrograde will pass, and your words will arrive in the expected order again, and most people will not even remember that there was a season when you had to say everything twice, when your clarity came backward and they had to learn to read it in a mirror.
But you will remember. And you will know, from then on, that your authority does not depend on the direction of arrival. It depends on whether you know what you mean, and whether you are willing to say it — backward, forward, twice, in a mirror, however many times it takes. The backward-moving season teaches you something that the forward-moving seasons never can: that you do not need the world to understand you on the first try. You do not need people to follow you immediately. You need only to know what is true, and to say it, even if it arrives in reverse, even if it sounds like riddles, even if they have to hold it to the light and read it backward to comprehend it. That is enough. That has always been enough.
